Professor Ndeso-Atanga was born in Mankon Town Bamenda in October 1952 to Lawrence Akuma Atanga (of blessed memory) and Theresia Sirri Atanga (still alive and strong).

His primary education (1959-1964) was in several schools in Bamenda because his father was a teacher and took the family with him wherever he was transferred to teach. Secondary education was at the famous Sacred Heart College Mankon (1964-1969). Post-secondary education began in The Jewish Hospital and Medical Center of Brooklyn New York, School of Nursing (1971-1974) where he qualified as an RN and was registered in the state of New York. After completing of the RN Diploma, he felt it was not challenging enough. From September 1974 to July 1978, he enrolled at the City College of New York where he studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences. After graduating from City College, the quest for advanced knowledge in the medical field continued, propelling him to Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health in New Haven, Connecticut where he completed a two-year Master of Public Health Degree in Epidemiology (1978-1980).

With this advanced preparation in Public Health, he returned to Cameroon in 1983 and served as the country’s chief epidemiologist for 14 years (1983-1997). With this experience, he decided to change careers from Public Health practice to University Lecturing. In the course of this switch, he went back to school and obtained a Doctorate in Public Health Medicine (University of Ghana, School of Public Health, 2005-2010). Since then, he has been teaching and researching in public health at the university level.
